What Types Of Grass Will Survive In Extreme Conditions.
As with all plants, particular types of grasses will grow well only
in their particular climate. It is always very beneficial to know what
types of grass will survive in different conditions such as drought and
other conditions. The grasses are broadly classified into two types,
namely, Cool season and warm season grasses.
It has been seen that the cool season grasses show the best growth in
areas where the summers are short and the winters involve snow cover.
They grow well during cool seasons and can remain green the entire
year-round, if properly irrigated. Grasses of the warm season prefer
warmer climates. They grow best during the warmer time of the year and
change color for the remaining part.
In an area where the cool season is prevalent, grasses like Hard Fescue,
Annual Rye and Turf-type perennial are very good choices. These grasses
are not only very strong in that they can take large amounts of foot
traffic but they are also drought resistant. The Hard Fescue takes up
very low amounts of fertilizer and can grow satisfactorily in shady
spots.

Australian Rye Grass Grasses like Rough Bluegrass, Red Fescue and Chewings Fescue are also
some of the cool season grasses. They are low maintenance grasses, but
they do not do very well in cases of wear and tear. Rough Bluegrass
thrives in conditions, which are shady and moist. It has minimal feeding
requirements, but does require considerable amounts of watering. Both
Fescue grasses demand very little fertilization and both also have
moderate water needs. The Red Fescue is found to be noticeably resistant
to drought.
Warm season grasses are more suited to drought conditions. Grasses like
Bahiagrass and Zoysiagrass are of the warm season kind. Bahiagrass can
grow fairly aggressively and has a very efficient root system, which can
withstand drought conditions and thrives in a good amount of rainfall.
There is also a grass called the Common Bermuda grass that shows good
drought resistance. In fact, it prefers the open, sunny vicinity for its
growth. The Zoysiagrass proves to be a hardy grass and has quite low
watering and feeding requirements. The Centipede grass is a
low-maintenance warm season grass but cannot withstand physical damage.
Centipede grass can survive even in poor quality soils and is known to
be a poor performer in drought conditions.
A word has to be mentioned regarding Australian grasses. The Australian
climate being very varied, from drought to freezing conditions, gives
rise to native grasses that can truly withstand the test of strength.
These grasses generally have deep and widely spread roots, which help
them capture as much water as they can. They are durable and low-lying
grasses, which stand their ground come drought, sleet or snow.
Certain types of grasses are more adapted to particular climates and to
specific uses. There are a large number of grasses existing today, which
means that everyone can get the grass of their choice. |
